Now that GZ is out of jail again, I hope that he will remain safe from those who have put a price on his head.

He can't really be held. That would be like in colonial days when you could be jailed just because the king or his governor said so. Let's also remember that he was in jail most recently about money and not Trayvon.

O'Mara says GZ is in a safe house and they only had to pay $85k, not the $100k.

Of the $85k, how much can the defendant get back?

Zero.  Defendant is paying a fraction of the bail, one tenth, and for that fee, the bail bondsman is on the hook to the state for a million dollars if defendant fails to appear.

That's rather punitive.  In my jurisdiction, when a defendant posts a 10% cash bond, the defendant gets 90% of that back at the end of the case (obviously if the defendant appears).  What is the custom in most states?  Is the majority rule to have complete forfeiture of the bond?

But in this case the defendant is not handing any cash over to the state, the bondsman is promising to pay the entire amount to the state if the defendant doesn't show up for trial, and the reason the bondsman does that is because the defendent pays him a fee which is equivalent to 10% of the amount of the bond, but the fee is not part of the bond and the bondsman keeps the fee no matter what happens.

The 10% is the bail bondsman fee.
