NBC sued over Trayvon tape
« on: October 03, 2012, 11:31:20 PM »
According to NY Post. Still waiting for official confirmation. I really hope it is true.

Trayvon Martin shooter George Zimmerman is suing NBC over the network’s botched editing of his 911 tape, Page Six can exclusively reveal. We hear Zimmerman’s attorneys are about to file a complaint against NBC and its top executives, naming news president Steve Capus and correspondent Ron Allen, who was the reporter on the scene for the broadcast on “Today” on March 27. He also remained the reporter for the story on “NBC Nightly News.” A source tells us, “The suit will be filed imminently against NBC and its news executives. The network’s legal department has put everybody in the news department involved with this incident on notice, telling them not to comment.”

I can see where it was a mistake made in the interest of fitting the allotted time, rather than a deliberate effort to "spin" the story, but I've got no problem with them learning an expensive lesson about not "misquoting by editing".

After their own internal investigation they fired three employees. I don't think they would have been fired for an honest mistake related to editing for allotted time.

Back in early April, Jeralyn discovered the deliberate misquote also appeared in text articles on NBC sites and preserved the evidence in screenshots.

I do share your sentiment to err toward protecting freedom of the press, it is an important distinction that the Post article seems to be referring to the doctored comments - not the edited one. Both are egregious errors that even a high school journalism student would be warned against. The quote section in question is also deliberate. They spliced two parts of a conversation out-of-order and out-of-context.

ETA:  Redbrow,  would you mind putting this in the Media and Bias thread, also?

If this is not true, I certainly hope MOM makes it true in the morning!

And this comment from that thread

probably gives the best illustration of what actually happened.

Because you can't drop a 'reason 2' and walk away...what's #1?

Reason #1 is this forum and the main page.  I thought it was obvious!   :) :)   What is not to love about this?

So O'Mara has confirmed that it is under consideration and they have brought in outside counsel to handle the lawsuit.

There's a later recap of all the nbc mis-edits with links to the articles here. The sequence:

  •   Luciano. Nightly News, March 17, No Misquote
Luciano, March 19 Today Show, No misquote
Al Sharpton, March 19, 6:00 pm ET, Misquote Version #1 (modified)
Pete Williams, March 19 NBC Nightly News, 6:30 pm ET, Misquote version #1
Luciano, March 20 Today Show, Misquote version #1
Luciano, March 21 Today Show, Selective, misleading quote but does not combine statements from different portions of call
Luciano, March 22 Today Show, Misquote version #2
Ron Williams, March 27 Today Show, Misquote version #2

It includes Lexis Nexis transcripts for these shows:

  •     Luciano March 17 Nightly News
        Luciano March 19 Today Show
Al Sharpton, March 19 (Luciano also on show)
Pete Williams, March 19, NBC Nightly News
        Luciano, March 20 Today Show
        Luciano, March 21 Today Show
        Luciano, March 22 Today Show
Ron Allen, March 27 Today Show

I just deleted a duplicate thread that had one comment in the media thread forum.

When the suit is filed, if it's filed, a new discussion can be started in Court Matters. Thanks.

The Wrap
Quote
"NBC intentionally edited George Zimmerman’s non-emergency call to make it appear he is a racist, then they repeatedly broadcast that edited tape to the nation.  What NBC did is outrageous," O'Mara said. "Due in large part to NBC’s actions, George has had to live in hiding, in fear for his life. Yes, we are considering a lawsuit against NBC for defamation, and we have collaborated with outside counsel to advise Mr. Zimmerman."

Since Lila Luciano was fired by NBC, along with Jeff Burnside and the unnamed producer, is that why she would not be named in the potential suit?  Her name crops up more often than Ron Allen's does.
