Frye Hearing to Continue Monday Afternoon
« on: June 14, 2013, 03:27:18 PM »
Mark O'Mara announced at a presser after court today that the Frye hearing will continue Monday afternoon. He will call one witness whom he expects to take 3 hours. The state may choose to call rebuttal witnesses, in which case it would continue Tuesday afternoon.

O'Mara excuses himself for the balance, West to examine the defense witness.

Dr. James L. Wayman is the first witness. Witness is sworn.

Dr. James Louis Wayman Ph.D has a doctorate in Acoustical Engineereing. His thesis was on the affects of spoken sound through open spaces in general and reflective surfaces in particular. Wrote a computer program to predict the distribution of sound in a space containing reflective surfaces. Developed algorithms during time with United States Navy for voice identification. Known as automated speaker recognition for DoD during 80s and 90s. For the last 12 years work for UK government to write standards for biometric study.

Holds 4 patents for human language including 2 for speaker recognition. Adjunct professor for USN postgraduate studies, worked Los Alamos National Laboratory, and Ford Aerospace, etc..., director of DoD's biometric studies lab, Works now at San Jose State for post-grad studies. Currently under contract for DoD and UK developing standards for automated voice recognition algorithms. Also works for Australian government for face recognition. Too many bona fides to keep up here.

Two dozen peer-reviewed articles on the subject, including uncertainty testing in biometric identification methodology. Co-authored book on biometric identification. Teaches 5-day course on speaker recognition for FBI. Taught this course for 10 years at UCLA as an extension course. Instructed many LA County sheriff office employees. Teaches mathematics behind speaker recognition. His course does not focus on math because audience generally is not familiar with advanced mathematics. Many grants for standards and speaker recognition.
