So taking a low level course at a second rate community college makes you an expert on law but a judge who graduated from Law school and practiced for decades makes it clear she is not yet an expert on the law in every matter...
What do you have against Seminole State College?

There is no difference between the law of self defense in Florida, and the set of laws referred to as SYG.  They are the same thing.

I don't know that this is true.

I don't know that this is true.

I'm not certain they are the same thing--each state has slightly different wording (and when dealing with legal stuff, as we've seen, it's all the details).

This arguing you were posting about back around 3:30ish, quarter of 4, where Nelson was doing the State's job, was there a witness during that time or were they arguing about something else? I'm curious because I'd like to know what to look for it under when it gets to youtube.

I don't know that this is true.

Articulate the distinction then.  Forida Statutes Chapter 776 - Justifiable use of Force

Not if you mean a witness who had been called.

The argument was about two witnesses and four exhibits, but mainly about the exhibits. They were materials for two courses GZ took, in criminal procedure and criminal investigation, his rejected application to become a police officer, which I think was in Virginia, and his application for an SPD ride-along.

The witnesses are the teachers for the two courses, Pleasance and Carter. Pleasance won't be available until tomorrow. For a while it looked like Carter might testify today, but the issues weren't settled and they took the fingerprint lady instead.

I thought I recalled that Pleasance taught criminal procedure, leaving Carter for criminal investigation, but another poster said it's the other way round.

I didn't say I know that it's not true. I'm not interested in researching the point right now.

I don't know that this is true.

And I don't mean to hold you to "legal correctness," I'd be happy to understand your impression of the difference, in particular how Mantei intends to use SYG (but not self defense) as an argument in this case.

Best I can tell, "SYG" has no specific meaning without more context, as each speaker imputes his own meaning to it.  Some complain about immunity (which has nothing to do with absence of duty to retreat), some complain that a person has the right to use self defense if their life is at risk; some seem to imply that a person who is physically restrained against her will has a duty to retreat, etc.

I'm not trying to put words in your mouth.  I'm asking you to describe both the distinction you see between SYG and self defense; and also, if you have a handle on it, how Maintei might use "SYG training" against Zimmerman - in particular, in a way that applies SYG but not the law of self defense.

Mantei says his witnesses are from out of town, but he'll arrange them to stay.

Why plural? Who besides Carter?

I don't know, and I don't think Mantei said.  Might be the person who can introduce the police application.  Nelson isn't telling the public which way she's going to rule on that one.
