Nifong Gets Shunned by Duke Students for and Ethical Durham
« on: November 05, 2006, 07:12:12 AM »

In today's News & Observer regarding early voting which ended at 1 p.m. yesterday, Niolet writes:

"Soon after he arrived, Nifong approached three members of Duke Students for an Ethical Durham, a group that has worked against Nifong. The prosecutor told the students that since they were working against him, they might as well meet. Nifong held out his hand. No one shook it. After an awkward moment, Nifong shook hands with the head of another anti-Nifong group, then went to work the line of voters."

The man is a moral leper. He should have people running in front of him crying "Avoid! Avoid!"

Great, now the Dukies will be labeled rude.  Who can blame them though.

I wouldn't shake his hand either.
We're not talking about someone who's been civil or fair in his treatment of Duke students.
He has done more than any single individual in history to sully the reputation of Duke and it's students, based on his statements.
He clearly has had an agenda for some time that is aimed at targeting Duke students for minor violations.
He doesn't deserve a handshake.  Good for them.
He's lucky they didn't spit on him.
Maybe one day he'll learn that to get respect from others, you have to first show that you respect them.

I give them credit for not shaking his hand...face it, it's easy to anyonymously criticize a person, regardless of whether the criticism is justified, but to publicly reject his offer of a hand shake, well, that takes some back bone...I think most people try to get along, and not make waves, in public, but to feel so strongly about someone that you reject to take his hand, to me, shows principle...moo

As to getting more votes... well if that's what he has to depend on at this point, he's in trouble.
They didn't shake his hand.
He led people to believe that Duke was a racist institution with a bunch of rich hooligans running around, getting drunk and raping outsiders at the first opportunity.

The only way I'd shake his hand is if he made a public statement that he made a big mistake, was dropping the indictments, and then apologized profusely for all the harm he has done.  Short of that, what he deserves isn't a handshake, but disbarment and a jail term.

The comment from Durham-in-Wonderland:

"Nifong has set up a “separate-but-equal” system of justice for Duke students, and then has the nerve to try to to use them as a photo-op?"

Couldn't agree more.  It is not as if Nifong has ever shown any respect for Duke students as a whole, so why would he suddenly want to get to know these students?  It was a photo op, in which they declined to participate.

Except it is a separate and unequal system, since it has been noted that Duke students are far more likely to arrested than non students for the same violations.

How much you want to bet the other "anti-Nifong" group was a Monks, which is to say crypto-pro-Nifong group?

And if Cheek wins by a few votes, I hope all here will be cheered by the votes attracted by these students standing up to a school-yard bully.

What a wasted opportunity.
They could have shaken his hand and asked him a simple question.

Do you really think they did it?
Why didn't you give they a probably cause hearing?
Why did the discovery take so long?
What did the AV tell you on April 11?
Why don't you believe in DNA test results?

Then let Nifong trip up on the answer, and then that is the headline.

They should have realized their behavior could offend Durhamites and that it feeds into the stereotype of Duke students being spoiled and disrespectful. That could cost them votes. Durhamites may not want uppity Duke students telling them how to run Durham.  They should have put their personal feelings aside.  They were representing Duke Students for an Ethical Durham, all of whom may not have wanted to be portrayed in that light.

Then let it offend.  His offer was everything that was civil and totally insincere.  The only thing that they did was they did not mimic the insincere hypocrisy of shaking the hand of someone who has made speeches which denigrate the Duke student body as a whole entity and incited a community against them, by playing to the Sterotype to which you refer.  Do you really think that the students shaking his hand would change the view of anyone who has stertyped them based on his published statements about them?  Not hardly likely, but it did show a measure of moral resolve that they were not willing to pander for cameras based on his now sudden discovery that they actually are members of his community too!

To me it just shows rudeness.  I am glad that was publicized also.
