They should have realized their behavior could offend Durhamites and that it feeds into the stereotype of Duke students being spoiled and disrespectful. That could cost them votes. Durhamites may not want uppity Duke students telling them how to run Durham.  They should have put their personal feelings aside.  They were representing Duke Students for an Ethical Durham, all of whom may not have wanted to be portrayed in that light.

Then let it offend.  His offer was everything that was civil and totally insincere.  The only thing that they did was they did not mimic the insincere hypocrisy of shaking the hand of someone who has made speeches which denigrate the Duke student body as a whole entity and incited a community against them, by playing to the Sterotype to which you refer.  Do you really think that the students shaking his hand would change the view of anyone who has stertyped them based on his published statements about them?  Not hardly likely, but it did show a measure of moral resolve that they were not willing to pander for cameras based on his now sudden discovery that they actually are members of his community too!

And if Cheek wins by a few votes, I hope all here will be cheered by the votes attracted by these students standing up to a school-yard bully.

We'll have to wait and see if it works out for them.  I don't think Bennent would be pleased.  He knows how to play the game.  Public perception and target audience. More to lose than gain from the stunt.

The point being they had nothing at all to lose.  Anyone who was convinced by his already published statements are not going to be swayed by a show of civility by him or by them, and those that have not (the ones that actually stop and think a bit) will realize that it is the height of hypocrisy for him to even attempt it in light of his statements, and would have been just as hypocritical of them to accept.

So can anyone confirm that the RNVC group did in fact shake his hand?

The student's response was right on the money.
Nifong wanted that photo of him published by his propaganda newspaper the Sun, so everybody could see that he's a "good guy", and he doesn't hold a grudge... how insincere is that?
The fact that the students refused to participate was the right decision.  I think they took potential votes away by not allowing that image of them to be used to Nifong's advantage.

I give them credit for not shaking his hand...face it, it's easy to anyonymously criticize a person, regardless of whether the criticism is justified, but to publicly reject his offer of a hand shake, well, that takes some back bone...I think most people try to get along, and not make waves, in public, but to feel so strongly about someone that you reject to take his hand, to me, shows principle...moo

To me it just shows rudeness.  I am glad that was publicized also.

Many of us prefer rude honesty to civil hypocrisy....

I would prefer to honor my parents and show I was raised not to be rude and nothing is worth showing my azz over.

Citation on DSED's connection to "Bennent"?

From the N&O-    " After an awkward moment, Nifong shook hands with the head of another anti-Nifong group, then went to work the line of voters."
Wonder who this was and if any "words" were exchanged.

If Nifong wins by a few squandered votes, I hope all here will be cheered by those three students' "principles."

Someone who was raised not to be rude, obviously.

What hand did they not shake?

The hand of a candidate?
The hand of the DA?
The hand of the lead prosecutor?
The hand of the lead investigator?
The hand of a corrupt local figure?

He seems to confuse many as to what or which capacity he's operating under.

LieStoppers has a post about the incident:  http://liestoppers.blogspot.com/2006/11/shake-hands-with-your-uncle-mike.html

I think the episode reflects Nifong's inability to understand, much less empathize, with what others feel.  His entire being imo is wrapped up in what HE feels.

Maybe Nifong can file charges against those people for Third Degree UNSAVORY Conduct.

The man whose wave of said hand could make this all go away.

True, and is it anyone's contention that it would be ethical for him to make it all go away based on whether or not one of the Duke student body shakes his hand?

Is it the duty of the Prosecutor to give a break to those whom he may see as polite and civil, but guilty, over those who are innocent but rude?

At least these students let everyone know where they stand, unlike Nifong who can denigrate and excoriate the Duke students in numerous speechs and then decide that he wants to shake their hand for the cameras

Pretty sickening.

The man is a moral leper. He should have people running in front of him crying "Avoid! Avoid!"

As he should be.       As he should've been for some time now.
